Soon after losing his fourth World Cup final, Sri Lankan
skipper Mahela Jayawardene decided to quit captaincy in the shortest format of
the game.
Jayawardene led Sri Lanka to the final of the WorldTwenty20
here, before they lost to the West Indies at the Premadasa on Sunday. The
35-year-old announced his decision at the end of the press conference after the
final.
“Just one more thing, guys. I have decided to step down as
the T20 captain. I had spoken to the selectors before the start of the
tournament, and they are fine with the decision.
This is a great opportunity for one of the young players to
step up. We need a young leadership going forward,” Jayawardene said.
Was the decision out of dejection of losing the final? “I
would have quit captaincy even if we had won,” clarified the veteran.
